What is digitizing patch

A digitizing patch refers to the process of creating a digital embroidery file specifically designed to be stitched onto a fabric patch. These patches are often used for branding, identification, or decorative purposes on various items such as uniforms, hats, bags, and jackets.

The process of digitizing a patch is similar to standard embroidery digitizing, but with some specific considerations:

1. Size and Shape: Patches come in various sizes and shapes, so the digitizing process takes into account the dimensions and contours of the patch. The digitizer ensures that the design fits within the confines of the patch and is optimized for the available space.

2. Border and Backing: Unlike direct embroidery onto fabric, patches typically have a border (merrowed or laser-cut) and a backing material (such as twill or felt). The digitizing process includes defining the stitching for the patch's border and any additional elements needed to secure the backing material.

3. Edge Finishing: Depending on the desired look and functionality of the patch, the digitizer may incorporate special edge finishing techniques such as satin stitches, zigzag stitches, or merrowing to prevent fraying and ensure durability.

4. Color and Detail: The digitized design considers the colors and level of detail required for the patch. This may involve selecting thread colors that closely match the artwork and adjusting the stitch density to achieve the desired level of clarity and definition.

5. File Format: The final digitized file is saved in a format compatible with embroidery machines and suitable for stitching onto patches. Common file formats include .DST, .EXP, .PES, .JEF, among others.

Once the digitized patch design is created, it can be loaded into an embroidery machine, and the stitching process can begin. The machine stitches out the design onto the patch material according to the instructions provided in the digitized file, resulting in a finished embroidered patch ready to be attached to garments or other items.
